The Day That Changed The Way I Think About Healing...

I remember the exact day my thoughts about conventional healing shifted. I was the charge nurse on a hospital oncology unit. One day, while working on my unit and preparing to infuse another IV, I held a bag of chemotherapy tightly in my right hand. As I reached for the IV tubing with my free hand, I spotted a medical magazine on the counter nearby. On the cover, in bold print, it read, “Energy Healing has been shown to reduce the size of tumors in a recent study.” It immediately awoke my interest. What was this “Energy Healing” about and if, indeed, it reduced tumors, could we practice it in my department?
After I read the journal, I was so drawn to the research and extraordinary stories of reducing the size of tumors with the use of healing hands therapy that I wanted to learn more.
I searched for places to study this type of intervention and a month later enrolled in a class called “Therapeutic Touch” at Michigan State University. That was the beginning of a long journey of discovery into the world of healing mind, body, and spirit. A powerful and new dimension of healing was revealed to me, one I never knew existed.
In class I learned that healing with hands is the oldest method of healing known to mankind. It is approximately 5,000 years old in written history and 12,000 years old in pictorial history. It has been with us since the beginning of time and probably will never leave. It has been practiced universally by every race, religion, color, and creed for centuries. Since it is part of our divine inheritance, it is innate in all of us: A mother pats the back of her crying child, and we place our hands on our head for a headache or on our stomach for stomachache. Simple responses that are so huge.

How has Reiki had an impact on your life? I can't wait to hear what you have to say.

  1. My mother-in-law uses Reiki. She once helped my mom who was due to get two knee and both hips replaced so walking was pretty tough. Not to mention her spine was in bad shape. My mother-in-law had session with her and for about...a week my mom was walking straighter which was amazing. Another amazing thing was when my mother-in-law was doing the healing she saw a vision with a lion and when the session was done my mom said, "For some reason I keep thinking about lions." Kinda weird but neat too. Best of luck!

  2. I don't know about Reiki, but I believe in the Christian practice of "Laying On Of Hands".

  3. Reiki has helped me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It has helped me learn more about myself, it has helped me help myself, and it has helped me to help others. Reiki set me on a new path in my life... which, in reality, is a path I had strayed from. So I guess I should say that Reiki has helped (is helping) me back to my true self.

    I like your blog!

  4. Shannon, it is fairly common for the healer and recipient to be on the same page...they often "see" the same things. Imagine it like going on line and sending emails to one another. Humans are very electrical and can pick up thought patterns. Remember "women's intuition" which probably saved human kind eternally. I love it when I connect with my clients. Also, Reiki and related decreases pain shown in so many studies. It is a wonderful thing about Reiki and worth the effort! Blessings to you, Sharon

  5. Vicki, Reiki and related are not faith healing but have some similarities-I and most practitioners feel the healing energy comes from our revered source. At the beginning of my sessions I always give the client an opportunity, if they wish, to silently call in their healers to assist with the treatment-it could be a religious figure, an angel, guide or ancestor. On the other hand, Reiki is related to acupuncture, polarity and some forms of chiropractic(net) as we have specific touchpoints to move chi through the body and removed stagnation. Every session, even though I have been doing this work for 23 years, is unique and awesome. I hope you will read my book, Healing With Hands, Miracles, Inspiration and Science," Reiki and related energy therapies. Go to www.sharonbaker.net It is about this work in everyday language. Thank you, Sharon

  6. Gin, Reiki is definately a pathway to yourself. So many of my students report an awakening or life change after taking Reiki. Many make self healing and assisting others to heal a big part of their life. It is a great, positive change which may keep you healthier mentally, physically and spiritually. All my best to you, Sharon
